Interview in Radio Prag, vom 2.8.2013 - mit Peter Freestone, der 12 Jahre lang der persönliche Assistent von Freddie Mercury war. Er spricht natürlich auch über die 3 Tracks, und wie sie entstanden.

Peter Freestone - former personal assistant to Freddie Mercury – discusses forgotten tracks the singer taped with Michael Jackson

The Times and Rolling Stone both caught fans’ attention this week by confirming that three lost songs Freddie recorded 30 years ago with Michael Jackson will be released later this year. At least one version of one of the songs is already well-known; another, called Victory, is not, and if I am not mistaken has never been heard. Did you ever wonder to yourself, since you were there at the time, whether these songs would ever be released?

“Because they were Michael’s property – they were recorded in his own studio in his home – I never expected them to see the light of day. But I am very happy they will. Two of the tracks have had various treatment by fans over the years – State of Shock and There Must Be More to Life Than This, both of which were released in different forms. One on the Jacksons’ album and one on Queen’s; but the third one, Victory, is something that has never been heard before.
“I still have some memories of it because I was there when it was recorded in the studio. In fact, on the original tape – and I don’t know if this will still exist – I played what you hear as the bass drum on the track. Only it isn’t a bass drum: what you hear is a toilet door! I had to stand there for five minutes banging a toilet door! So, you know, I think it is going to be something for people to enjoy, it should be very interesting.”

Hopefully that stays on the track!
“I hope so!” (laughs)

Do you think the release of the third song could cause a sensation?
“I really hope so. Of course even the other two tracks will receive different treatment now that Queen are involved in the production. I am sure that they will be paying attention to Freddie’s voice and the production of the whole track. They are perfectionists and everything has to be just right. But I believe that it will be worth the wait.”

Where did the impulse to work together come from?
“The first that I heard about it was when Michael came to a Queen show at the Forum in Los Angeles. I remember him talking in the corner with Freddie and John. Afterwards Freddie said 'Huh! Michael says we should be doing something together because he loves what he’s heard!' Because he’d been listening to Another One Bites the Dust and loved that and the whole feel of it. So Freddie said 'He wants to meet up to record. Ah, but it’ll never happen, it’s just talk!'. Months later that was followed up with a phone call from Michael, because he had heard Freddie was in L.A. and he invited him over.”

My understanding is that that meeting was less than optimal...
(burst of laughter) “I know what you are referring to. Well, Michael, if you remember, at that time in his place in Encino had almost a mini-zoo and his favourite animals at the time were the llamas. Given it was summer in Los Angeles, Freddie wore a white t-shirt, white jeans, white trainers and after the tour his t-shirt was white jeans with the bottoms brown with spattered mud and brown trainers because we’d had been traipsing through the mud.”
“Michael also took us around his home and in his bedroom and it was so funny: he had a large terrarium with a big snake inside. Publically, Michael said it was a great friend and the best and a really good and amazing snake... we couldn’t help but notice that there were about forty bricks keeping the lid of the terrarium down, to make sure it could not get out!”

That’s cute!
“Yeah, it’s amazing what can be said in public and the little different facts behind it!”

The actual recordings: when were those done, on a different day?
“No it was the same day. Both of them were really busy recording and touring in 1983. Michael wanted Freddie to finish State of Shock because he wanted it for the Jacksons’ album called Victory. But Freddie had very little time and he wasn’t able to finish it. So Michael suggested that Mick Jagger could sing the other part and Freddie said of course it’s your music, he didn’t object. For time reasons, the two weren’t able to pick up the material again.”

How does the quality of the vocals strike you in terms of how the singers complement each other? Freddie was such a powerhouse singer...
“I think because they are so different that it works very well. If both of them had powerful voices it would seem almost like a competition. You used the right word with ‘complement’: the two voices work together very well and it’s like a conversation.”

Die Times und der RS haben beide diese Woche bestätigt, dass 3 Songs, die Freddie vor 30 Jahren mit Michael Jackson aufnahm, dieses Jahr veröffentlicht werden. Zumindest einer dieser Songs ist bekannt; ein anderer, Victory, ist es nicht und wenn ich richtig verstehe, war er nie zu hören. Haben sie sich je gefragt, weil sie doch zu der Zeit da´bei waren, ob diese Songs je veröffentlicht würden?
„Weil sie Michael gehören – sie wurden in seinem Studio in seinem Haus aufgenommen – ich habe nie erwartet, dass sie das Tageslicht erblicken. Aber ich bin sehr froh, dass sie es jetzt tun. Zwei der Songs wurden von Fans durch die Jahre bearbeitet, State of Shock und There Must Be More to Life. Dannn wurden sie auch beide unterschiedlich veröffentlicht, einer auf einem Queen Album, einer auf einem von Jackson, aber der dritte, Victory, war nie zu hören.
Ich erinnere mich noch daran, denn ich war dort,als er im Studio aufgenommen wurde. Es ist sogar so, dass auf dem Originalband – von dem ich nicht weiß, ob es noch existiert – ich das spiele, was man als Basstrommel hört. Es ist allerdings keine Basstrommel: was man hört ist eine Toilettentür! Ich musste 5 Minuten da stehen und die Toilettentür knallen. Es wird also etwas sehr gutes für die Leute, es könnte sehr interessant werden.“

Hoffentlich bleibt es auf der Aufnahme!
„Ich hoffe doch“

Denkst du, die Veröffentlichung des 3. Songs könnte eine Sensation sein?
„Ich hoffe das. Natürlich werden auch die anderen Songs neu bearbeitet, jetzt, wo Queen an der Produktion beteiligt ist. Ich bin sicher, man achtet auf Freddies Stimme und der Produktion der ganzen Aufnahme. Sie sind Perfektionisten, und alles muss genau stimmen. Ich glaube, es wird das lange Warten wert sein.“

Woher kam der Anstoss, zusammen zu arbeiten?
„Das erstemal hörte ich davon, als Michael zu einer Queenshow kam, im Forum in LA. Ich erinnere mich, dass er in einer Ecke mit Freddie und John sprach. Danach sagte Freddie „Huh, Michael sagt, wir sollten etwas zusammen machen, weil er liebt, was er gehört hat.“ Weil er Another One Bites The Dust zuhörte, und das Feeling des Songs mochte. Also sagte Freddie „Er möchte, dass wir uns treffen und aufnehmen. Ah – aber es wird nicht stattfinden, es ist nur Gerede.“ Monate später kam es zu einem Anruf von Michael, denn er hörte, dass Freddie in LA war und er lud ihn ein.

Ich habe gehört, das Meeting war nicht so optimal...
„(Lacht) Ich weiß, worauf du anspielst. Also, Michael, wenn du dich erinnerst, hatte zu der Zeit in Encino einen kleinen Zoo und seine Lieblingstiere waren die Lamas. Es war Sommer in LA und Freddie trug ein weißes T-Shirt, weiße Jeans und Sneakers, und nach dem Rundgang waren seine Jeans braungefleckt, weil wir durch den Matsch laufen mussten.“

„Michael führte uns auch durch sein Haus und sein Schlafzimmer und es war so lustig: Er hatte ein großes Terrarium mit einer Schlange. Öffentlich sagte Michael, sie sei sein Freund und die wirklich beste, tollste Schlange.... aber wir konnten nicht umhin, zu bemerken, dass etwa 40 Steine auf dem Deckel des Terrariums lagen, damit der Deckel geschlossen blieb, und um sicherzustellen, dass sie nicht heraus könne.“

Das ist nett!
„Ja, es ist beeindruckend, was man öffentlich sagt, und die leicht anderen Fakten, die dahinter stecken.“

Die eigentlichen Aufnahmen: wurden sie an einem anderen Tag gemacht?
„Nein, es war am gleichen Tag. Beide waren 1983 sehr beschäftigt mit Aufnehmen und Touren. Michael wollte, dass Freddie State Of Shock fertigstellen sollte, weil er es für das Jackson Album Victory wollte. Aber Freddie hatte nur sehr wenig Zeit und konnte es nicht beenden. Also schlug Michael vor, dass Mick Jagger Freddies Part singen könne und Freddie sagte, `natürlich, es ist deine Musik`, und hatte nichts dagegen. Aus zeitlichen Gründen konnten die beiden die Sache nicht wieder in Angriff nehmen.“

Wie denkst du darüber, dass sich die Vocals der zwei Sänger ergänzen? Freddie war so eine Power-Stimme...
„Ich glaube, weil sie so unterschiedlich sind, funktioniert es sehr gut. Wenn sie beide solche Powerstimmen hätten, wäre es fast wie ein Wettstreit. Du hast das richtige Wort gebraucht „Ergänzen“: Die beiden Stimmen funktionieren sehr gut miteinander und es ist wie eine Konversation.“

.hmmm..also wenn's ne Christmas Single wird.. dann kann es sich vom Thema her eigentlich nur um "There Must Be More To Life Than This" handeln...

Sagt er wirklich Single? Spricht er nicht von einer Queen-Record, die zu Weihnachten raus kommt? Ist mir nicht ganz klar. Also Single wäre mir lieber.

...ich verstehe auch "... for their christmas record.."... und ich denke, es gibt eine komplette CD, mit mehreren unveröffentlichten songs , oder neu bearbeiteten, von Queen und darunter eben auch die 3 MJ-Freddie-tracks. Ich würde mir auch gerne die ganze CD anhören...bzw. anschaffen.. Nur eine Single fände ich garnicht so toll.

Wobei eine Single-Veröffentlichung natürlich den Vorteil hat das die Wahrscheinlichkeit des Radio-Airplays wesentlich höher ist als ohne Single-Veröffentlichung.

Brian May im Interview anlässlich Freddies Geburtstag. Er spricht auch kurz über die Freddie/Michael Tracks. Das Album soll wohl Ende des Jahres kommen... man ist noch in Verhandlungen mit Freddies und Michaels Estate (muss ja alles seine Ordnung haben..).. aber insg. siehts wohl gut aus...

Queen - Roger Taylor Urges Michael Jackson Executors To Speed Up Duets Release
Queen rocker Roger Taylor blames the executors of Michael Jackson's estate for a four-year delay in the release of the Thriller star's secret duets with Freddie Mercury.
The existence of several unreleased collaborations between the two pop icons was revealed by the band's guitarist, Brian May, in 2009, days after Jackson died from an overdose of anaesthetic.
Taylor and May worked together to finish the incomplete tracks and they are hoping the songs will be released later this year (13), but Taylor blames those in charge of Jackson's estate for holding up the project.
He tells Mojo magazine, "Freddie and Michael never finished the songs, because Queen had to leave L.A. to go on tour. Brian and I have worked on them, which means they'll come out as Queen and Michael Jackson - hopefully... if the Michael Jackson estate can get its a**e into gear."

eigentlich möchte ich jetzt nicht auch noch am estate zu zweifeln beginnen..

also hoffe ich mal weiter um eine 'baldige' veröffentlichung..

Queen’s Roger Taylor has revealed that the band have been working on unreleased Queen material, including tracks Freddie Mercury recorded with Michael Jackson.

In conversation with Nicky Horne for tomorrow’s Classic Rock Magazine Show (Oct 24), 6-9pm on www.teamrockradio.com, Taylor comments:

“Brian especially has been active working on old tracks. A couple of tracks that Freddie did with Michael Jackson… They’ve been hanging around for years and years and Michael’s estate haven’t really been able to make their mind up about what to do with them. So we suggested we finish them and see. They’re pretty good – one of them is great.”
"Brian war besonders aktiv dabei an den alten Tracks zu arbeiten. Ein paar Tracks die Freddie mit Michael Jackson machte.... Sie hiengen herum für Jahre und Jahre und Michaels Estate konnte sich nicht wirklich eine Meinung bilden was mit ihnen zu machen ist. So schlugen wir Ihnen vor sie fertigzustellen und zu sehen. Sie sind wirklich gut- einer von ihnen ist großartig."

The tracks were recorded at Jackson’s home studio in 1983.
