It was news to the world when Michael Jackson's estate bought the luxury home that his mother and three children had been renting since 2009. The deal closed this week for $10.750 million. She liked that the home, on the most prominent ridge of The Estates at the Oaks, felt both open and safe. She told Diko Kassabian that she appreciated its coziness and hominess. This airy, open feeling that is signature to Kassabian Design Build homes is exactly what Oprah Winfrey commented on during her interview with Paris in 2012.Despite its majestic size--some 12,670 square feet--the Jackson family home, originally built on spec in 2008, was created without supersizing the individual rooms. Jackson family to open gift shop in Gary

GARY — Michael Jackson and Jackson family fans will soon have a place to get their gear and memorabilia locally, officials say.
A city official confirmed that Katherine Jackson, matriarch of the musical clan, is completing permits to open a business on the city’s near west side.
Trent Jackson, a nephew and traveling companion of Katherine Jackson, said the family will convert the house directly east of the family house at 2300 Jackson St. to a gift shop with plans to open Aug. 15.
The annual Michael Jackson birthday celebration begins two weeks later.
The family will make a formal announcement in the coming weeks, Trent Jackson said, but the house will be a pick-up point for fans who buy merchandise online. There will be no money kept at the house, and the pick-up service will be for those who buy a certain amount of merchandise.
Trent Jackson, who lives in Calabasas, California, with other family members, declined to discuss the dollar amount of the purchases that can be picked up, and he did not offer details on the goods that will be sold.
The Jackson family will reinvest the proceeds into the neighborhood and, possibly, Roosevelt High School, which is directly west of the house.
“We want to keep the block looking nice,” Jackson said. “We want to help out with the neighbors here and help out with the school.”
On Wednesday, on the fifth anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death, Trent Jackson and a woman could be seen cleaning the inside of the proposed shop. The lawn outside the small house is well manicured, and it appears much work has been done on the building. Like 2300 Jackson St., the property is surrounded by a high, black fence.
Chelsea Whittington, Gary’s communication director, could not offer details about the gift shop plans, but she said such a project would be “a great complement to the Fuller Center housing build” in the area later this summer.
From Aug. 24-29, the Fuller Center, a faith-based agency building low-income housing around the world, will host a house-building blitz in Gary, building two new homes and renovating two more.

The six-episode show, debuting Nov. 18 on Reelz, focuses on Alejandra Jackson, the ex-wife of Michael's brother Jermaine, and her five children. After Michael's death five years ago, they left the Jackson family home in suburban Encino, a move that a clip from the show suggests wasn't their idea.

Ich habe gerade erst realisiert, dass der Titel der Sendung "Living with the Jacksons" heißt, erinnert ja wirklich gar nicht an eine andere berüchtigte Doku

Randy Jr., Jaafar, Donte, Genevieve, and Jermajesty Jackson didn’t have a normal childhood.

“Growing up we were very sheltered,” said 24-year-old Genevieve, during the TCA summer press tour panel Saturday for Reelz’ Living With the Jacksons. “…Coming from this family there’s a lot of politics involved in it and there was a lot of outside people coming in and out of our house. So we had to watch what we said, how we acted because the media, the world was looking at us.”

Living With the Jacksons, a six episode event series, follows the siblings - and their mother Alejandra - as they adjust to life outside the “Jackson bubble.” They lived in Hayvenhurst, the Jackson family estate, until their uncle Michael’s 2009 death.

“This is just a chance for us to openly and honestly express ourselves,” said Donte.

Despite their restrictive upbringing, the siblings - Jaafar and Jermajesty were Alejandra's children with Jermaine Jackson, while Donte, Genevieve and Randy Jr. were with Jermaine's brother Randy - were quick to defend their grandparents, Katherine and Joe Jackson, explaining that Katherine and Joe helped raise them.

“We weren’t reprimanded by them, more by the lifestyle,” said Donte.

The lifestyle included paparazzi camping outside the house, security guards, and waves of people coming and going.

Other highlights from the panel included:
—The siblings said they didn’t know growing up who liked them for them and who liked them for their last name. Randy explained that he would introduce himself as Randy Johnson to try to get to know the person first.

—Alejandra doesn’t mind that her older children are still living with her. “The longer they stay, I feel like is better for them.”

—On wether the name helps or hurts: “We just know that we have to work twice as hard,” said Randy, citing the pressure to live up to the name.

—The five of them fondly recalled their Uncle Michael, saying that he would play hide and seek with them and let them ride the Neverland rides. “He was such a tender, childlike, and the whole house would come to life,” said Alejandra. “He was just such a wonderful person.”

Gift shop pickup site near Jackson home to open in August
GARY | A merchandise pickup site next to Michael Jackson's childhood home is set to open the weekend of what would have been the pop star's 56th birthday.

The property at 2306 Jackson St., nearly connected to the Jackson family's home at 2300 Jackson St., will serve as a location for customers to pick up merchandise bought online, said Sharon Chambers, a local member of a committee organizing festivities for Jackson's birthday weekend.

"It's not just a store where you walk in off the street," she said. "You can make an appointment to come in to pick up items."

The Gary home where he was raised is a popular location for memorial tributes, with increased foot traffic around the anniversaries of his birthday and the day he died.

The festivities the weekend of Aug. 29 will be part of a program hosted by his mother, Katherine Jackson.
