Vor 25 Jahren, Anfang Mai 1996, wurde bekannt gegeben, dass es keine HIStory Konzerte in Deuschland geben wird. Damit machten Sony Music Deutschland und hiesige Konzertveranstalter öffentlichkeitswirksam Druck auf die Regierung wegen einer neuen Künstlersteuer.

Mitte der 90er besichtigte Michael mehrere französische Schlösser. Je nach Meldung wollte er eins kaufen oder holte sich Inspirationen für den Bau eines neuen Schlosses in einem damals geplanten zweiten Neverland in Europa.

Am 7. und 8. Mai 1996 besuchte Michael Jackson das Fürstentum Monaco, um bei den World Music Awards 1996 "Earth Song" zu performen und jede Menge Preise abzusahnen. In einem kurzen Backstage-Interview mit einem jüdischen Reporter des US TV-Senders ET nutzt Michael die Gelegenheit, falsche Gerüchte über ihn als Antisemiten klarzustellen.

Deutsche TV-Version der World Music Awards 1996. Das Ganze fand am 8. Mai 1996 in Monaco statt und wurde dann am 26.5.1996 auf Premiere ausgestrahlt. Hier nur die Michael-Szenen... Michael im Publikum, "Earth Song"-Auftritt, Awards und Diana Ross Auftritt.

1996-05-11 Michael Jacksons Achterbahn im Phantasialand 1996

Am 11. Mai 1996, wenige Tage nachdem er in Monaco bei den World Music Awards mit dem "Earth Song" auftrat, besuchte Michael Jackson das Phantasialand in Brühl bei Köln. Bei seinem vierten Besuch im Park weihte er eine neue Achterbahn ein, bei der er wohl auch Tipps zum Bau gegeben hatte - "The Michael Jackson Thrill Ride".

Aach, das fand er doch selber lustig.
Hat nicht Taj Jackson letztens erzählt, dass sie nach Michaels Tod irgendwelche Prospekte für Sauerstoffkammern gefunden in Michaels Sachen. Ich glaube es ging um ein Michael-Museum das Michael noch selber auf Neverland geplant hatte. Das "Wo ist das Sauerstoff Zelt?" hatte sich dort sicherlich zum Running Gag entwickelt.

Bericht über die Nachwirkungen von Michael Jacksons Videodreh in den Slums von Rio de Janeiro für das "They Don't Care About Us" Video. Etwa 4 Monate nach den Aufnahmen sprechen unter anderem die Trommler der Gruppe Olodum. Aus Pro 7 "SAM" vom 29. Mai 1996.

Übrigens: Anders als hier erwähnt (1:42), sprach sich Brasiliens Fußballheld Pelé DAFÜR aus, dass Michael nach Rio kommen konnte. Anfangs hatte die dortige Regierung noch versucht den Videodreh zu stoppen, da man sich gerade um die olympischen Spiele bewarb, und da wollte man keine Slum-Bilder aus Rio um die Welt schicken.

1996-07-16 Michael Jackson's erstes Brunei Konzert Juli 1996 (Newsclips)

Am 16. Juli 1996 wärmte sich Michael Jackson für die bevorstehende HIStory Tour auf, indem er dem Sultan von Brunei ein Geburtstagskonzert spielte. Der Sultan war damals der reichste Mann der Welt und zahlte Michael etwa 15 Millionen Dollar für den zweistündigen Auftritt. Die Songs und Kostüme waren die eines Konzerts der drei Jahre zuvor abgebrochenen Dangerous Tour, plus zwei neue Songs "You Are Not Alone" und "Earth Song". Die Show fand im Jerudong Park Garden des Sultans statt, ein Disney-artiger Freizeitpark mit damals freiem Eintritt für alle. Auch das Konzert war für die 60.000 Fans gratis.

1996-07-18 Michael Jackson in Süd Afrika bei Nelson Mandelas Geburtstag 1996

Am 18. Juli 1996, zwei Tage nachdem er dem Sultan von Brunei ein Geburtskonzert gegeben hatte, kam Michael Jackson in Süd Afrika an. Er landete umjubelt in Johannesburg, besuchte Nelson Mandela's private Geburtstagsfeier zum 78. und legte danach noch einen Kranz an einer Gedenkstätte gegen Polizeigewalt in Soweto nieder. Am 19. Juli hielt Michael in Sun City eine Rede in der er auch seine ersten Konzerte in Süd Afrika ankündigte. Vor der Abreise gab er zusammen mit Nelson Mandela noch eine kurze Pressekonferenz am Regierungssitz in Pretoria.

Michael Jackson: "We are behaving like people without compassion and love for the most vulnerable section of society. The children of the universe are without a spokesperson, they are voiceless. We are all touched by the atrocities committed against children: sexual, physical abuse, child slave labor, educational neglect. We feel ashamed, Angry, Appalled. But there is no action No action.", Michael declares. At the press conference also, he gives an emotional discourse to the people of South Africa: “First, I would like to say, sincerely, from the bottom of my heart, you have no idea how happy and honored I am to be here in South Africa. The people here have been so kind to me their love, their generosity, the hospitality has been overwhelming. I mean, I’m saying this from the bottom of my heart, ‘cause I really mean it. And I’m not wearing these glasses to be Mr. Cool, I wear these glasses because they are a facade, so you won’t have to see my tears ... [voice choking with emotions] ... I’m so happy to be here and you all have been so wonderful to me and I want to thank you so much and I thank you for coming to Sun City. I would like to take this opportunity to thank president Nelson Mandela and the wonderful people of South Africa for this gracious, really gracious welcome to your wonderful country. I just love it. I love it so much, I’m looking for a house to buy here [laughs]… I would like to thank the wonderful wonderful (inaudible) and the staff and its hospitality and hosting this conference. And I’m sorry I was not able to play South Africa dates previously, because I was so much looking forward to coming here. But now I am really excited about bringing the HIStory Tour – a brand new show, the HIStory Tour to South Africa. We are in negotiations right now, with promoters now and, but we’re playing South Africa in mid January 1997, in Capetown, in Durban and Johannesburg.
